If your cabinets are in good shape but your benchtop looks tired, chipped or dated, you don’t need a full renovation to get a kitchen that feels new. Replacing kitchen benchtops on their own is one of the quickest ways to transform the room, and it keeps your budget where it makes the biggest difference.
We replace benchtops for homeowners across Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle, and because we measure, fabricate and install everything in-house, most projects move from measure to installation within days, not weeks. Here is what to check, how the process works and what to plan for.
Can You Replace a Benchtop Without Replacing the Cabinets?
Yes, in most kitchens. Your benchtop sits on top of the cabinet carcasses, so as long as those cabinets are structurally sound, level and strong enough to carry a stone benchtop, the top can be removed and replaced on its own.
Your doors, drawers and layout stay exactly as they are. You get the look and feel of a new kitchen without the cost, mess or timeline of a full rebuild.
Signs Your Cabinets Are Ready for a New Benchtop
Before you start, take a few minutes to look over your existing cabinetry. Your cabinets are a good candidate if:
- Doors and drawers open, close and align properly
- There is no swelling or water damage, especially under the sink and beside the dishwasher
- The cabinets are level, or close enough to be packed level during installation
- The layout still works for the way you cook and live
- You are happy with the door finish, or plan to refresh doors and handles separately
If you find water damage under the sink, have it repaired before your new benchtop goes in. A new surface deserves a solid base. Not sure whether it is time? Our guide to the 5 signs it’s time to replace your kitchen benchtop is a good place to start.
What a Benchtop-Only Replacement Involves
A benchtop replacement follows the same steps as any of our projects, with one extra stage: removing the old top.
- Request a quote. Send us your plans, a few photos and rough measurements. Every quote is fully itemised, so you can see exactly what you are paying for.
- Book your measure. We measure on site and talk through your sink, cooktop, overhangs and edge profile, so every detail is settled before fabrication starts.
- Remove the old benchtop. The existing top is carefully lifted off your cabinets. Your sink, taps and cooktop are disconnected first, which usually means booking your plumber and electrician for the same day.
- Fabricate your new benchtop. Our in-house team cuts and finishes your benchtop to your exact measurements, including sink and cooktop cut-outs.
- Install and reconnect. We fit, join and seal the new benchtop, then your trades reconnect the sink, taps and cooktop.

Five Things to Think About Before You Order
1. Weight and support
A stone benchtop is heavier than many older benchtop types. During the measure we check that your cabinets can carry the load and let you know if extra support is needed, particularly for islands and breakfast bar overhangs.
2. Your splashback
Lifting the old benchtop can disturb tiles that sit directly on top of it. It is worth knowing this upfront. Many homeowners use the replacement as the moment to add a matching stone splashback for a seamless finish.
3. Your sink and cooktop
You can often reuse your existing sink and cooktop, but this is also the easiest time to upgrade. If you would like an undermount sink, or a cooktop in a different size, have the model details ready at your measure so the cut-outs are right first time.
4. Edge profile and thickness
The edge is one of the smallest details on a benchtop and one of the most noticeable. Settling it before your measure keeps your project moving. Our edge profiles guide explains how each edge looks, feels and wears.
5. A silica-free surface
Since the national ban on high-silica benchtop materials took effect on 1 July 2024, choosing a compliant surface matters more than ever. We specialise in silica-free benchtops, and we will talk you through the options that suit your kitchen, your style and the way you use the space.
How Long Does a Benchtop Replacement Take?
Because we handle everything in-house, most projects move from measure to installation within days, not weeks. Most of the disruption happens on installation day, and your kitchen is usually back in use as soon as your sink and cooktop are reconnected.
Planning to host this summer? The calendar fills quickly in the lead-up to the Christmas break, so the earlier we measure, the more say you have over your installation date. Our guide to planning your kitchen renovation before Christmas walks you through it.
What Does It Cost to Replace a Kitchen Benchtop?
Every kitchen is different, so the cost depends on a few key factors:
- The size and shape of your benchtop, and the number of joins
- Sink, cooktop and tap cut-outs
- Your edge profile and benchtop thickness
- Removal of the existing benchtop
- Whether you add a splashback or waterfall end

“Most people are surprised by how much a new benchtop changes the whole kitchen. If your cabinets are sound, there is no reason to rip them out. I would rather help you put your budget where you will notice it every day.”

Frequently Asked Questions
Will my cabinets be damaged when the old benchtop is removed?
Not usually. The old benchtop is carefully lifted off the cabinet carcasses. Older cabinets with existing water damage may need repairs before the new benchtop goes in, and we will flag this at your measure.
Can I keep my existing sink and cooktop?
Often, yes. Let us know at the measure and we will cut the new benchtop to suit. If you are upgrading, have the new model details ready so the cut-outs are exact.
Do I need to replace my splashback?
Not always. Tiles sitting directly on the old benchtop can be disturbed during removal, so it is worth planning for. A matching stone splashback is a popular choice for a clean, seamless look.
Can I change the shape or add an overhang?
Yes. A replacement is a great opportunity to extend an island or add a breakfast bar overhang. We will check that your cabinets can support it and recommend extra support where needed.
Do you replace benchtops in my area?
We replace and install benchtops across Sydney, Wollongong and Newcastle, with one-on-one support from your first quote to the final install.
